Your heart needs health

Whenever people ask me which supplements they should be taking, at the top of the list are the omega-3 fatty acids. Since this is the month for love and heart health, I thought I’d take the time to explain the importance of omega-3 for our most poetic (and important) of organs.
You probably know that there are fats you need to avoid (like trans fats and saturated fats) if you want to have a healthy heart, but you may not know that there are other fats that you actually NEED to have in your diet to help your heart be healthy.

The omega-3 fatty acids (also known as EPA/DHA) are considered “essential” because you must get them in your diet—our bodies do not make them, so if your diet does not provide adequate amounts of these fats you may be missing these necessary nutrients. While the omega-3 fatty acids are important for many bodily functions, they are incredibly important for heart health.

Researchers have been investigating the link between omega-3s and heart health; let’s take a look at some key findings:

•Omega-3 fatty acids may help you lower your overall cholesterol levels. In fact, not only do they seem to reduce cholesterol in general, they also may help to raise HDL (the “good” cholesterol) levels. Other studies have shown that supplementing with 2 to 4 grams of omega-3s also may lower triglyceride levels.

•As you may know, chronic inflammation in our bodies is bad and can be especially harmful to our heart. The omega-3 fatty acids also have a role to play in inflammation, where they help to produce chemicals in our bodies (called eicosanoids) that may reduce inflammation.

•Other studies have shown the omega-3s were able to help lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, and even seem to reduce irregular heartbeats.

•Another study has shown that eating at least one to two servings a week of fish (that’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids) appears to reduce the risk of heart disease, particularly sudden cardiac death.

•A new report titled Smart Prevention—Health Care Cost Savings Resulting from the Targeted Use of Dietary Supplements suggests that if people at high risk for Coronary Heart Disease would take 1 gram of EPA+DHA a day that the cost saving (from prevented heart disease) would be more than $480 million dollars per year in health care cost savings.
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating one to two servings of cold-water fish every week.  Since so many people have a hard time making that goal, another recommendation is supplementing with at least 1 gram per day of EPA+DHA.

The best way to take care of your heart is to eat healthfully, avoid fast foods, get to a BMI of 25 or below, become more active, and add at least a gram of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, through a healthy diet including fish and/or supplementation.

A Daily Serving of Nuts May Help You Live Longer

Many of us have been told to limit nut consumption because of the high fat content, but now a study from Harvard indicates that eating nuts may actually help people live longer. The study’s results, which were published in the November 21 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, stretched from the 1980s until 2010 and analyzed data from 76,000 women and 42,000 men.

Researchers found that those people who ate 1 ounce (28 grams) of nuts daily, seven days a week, were 20 percent less likely to die over a 30-year period compared with those who did not eat nuts. They were also 29 percent less likely to die of heart disease, 11 percent less likely to die from cancer, and 24 percent less likely to die from respiratory disease. Eating nuts was also connected to a reduced risk of death: people who ate nuts daily were 20 percent less likely to die than those who never ate nuts.
Nuts are nutritional powerhouses, rich in minerals, vitamins, protein, unsaturated fatty acids, and antioxidants. Past studies have shown that nuts improve blood vessel function, blood sugar control, and may help with losing weight – all factors that contribute to better cardiovascular health. They can reduce the risk of colon cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. That being said, not all nuts are created equally. It’s a good idea to avoid fried, salted, or sweetened nuts and stick with the plain, unsalted variety.

Almonds: These are an excellent source of antioxidant Vitamin E.

Walnuts: These contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids that may protect against irregular heart rhythms.

Pecans: They are higher in fat than other nuts, but contain important B-complex vitamins.

Macadamia nuts: They have lots of Vitamin E and selenium.

Pine nuts: They contain lutein, monosaturated fats, and vitamins A, C, and D.

Hazelnuts (filberts): These are rich in magnesium, which keeps the heart from overexerting itself, unsaturated fats, and vitamin E.

Peanuts: While they’re not officially nuts, their nutritional properties make them part of the nut family. These are rich in potassium, protein, and vitamin B.

Brazil nuts: While these contain mostly unsaturated fat, they do have the highest amount of saturated fat among the other nuts. They’re also provide selenium, magnesium, and copper.

Pistachios: These contain vitamin E, oleic avid, and many healthy minerals and antioxidants.

The study was paid for by the National Institutes of Health and the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation, but the Council had no say in how the study was done or how its results were eventually reported.
The study relied on self-reported information from the participants, and does not prove that nuts caused the participants to live longer. While the researchers did account for several factors that may impact a person's longevity, such as weight and vegetable consumption, there may be other confounding variables.
The good news is now you don’t need to avoid the holiday nut plate – just choose wisely.

The Landmark Study Conducted by Shaklee

I thought it would be a great idea to review the Landmark Study conducted by Shaklee in 2007. It covers how proper supplementation can enhance health and prevent long term chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND
Dietary supplement use in the United States is prevalent and represents an important source of nutrition. However, little is known about individuals who routinely consume multiple dietary supplements. This study describes the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of long-term multiple dietary supplement users, and where possible makes comparisons to non-users and multivitamin/mineral supplement users.

METHODS
Using a cross-sectional study design, information was obtained by online questionnaires and physical examination (fasting blood, blood pressure, body weight) from a convenience sample of long-term users of multiple dietary supplements manufactured by Shaklee Corporation (Multiple Supp users, n=278). Data for non-users (No Supp users, n=602) and multivitamin/mineral supplement users (Single Supp users, n=176) were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2002 and NHANES III 1988-1994. Logistic regression methods were used to estimate odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.

RESULTS
Dietary supplements consumed on a daily basis by more than 50% of Multiple Supp users included a multivitamin/mineral, B-complex, vitamin C, carotenoids, vitamin E, calcium with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, flavonoids, lecithin, alfalfa, coenzyme Q10 with resveratrol, glucosamine, and a herbal immune supplement. The majority of women also consumed gamma linolenic acid and a probiotic supplement, whereas men also consumed zinc, garlic, saw palmetto, and a soy protein supplement. Serum nutrient concentrations generally increased with increasing dietary supplement use. After adjustment for age, gender, income, education and body mass index, greater degree of supplement use was associated with more favorable concentrations of serum homocysteine, C-reactive protein, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides, as well as lower risk of prevalent elevated blood pressure and diabetes.

CONCLUSIONS
This group of long-term multiple dietary supplement users consumed a broad array of vitamin/mineral, herbal, and condition-specific dietary supplements on a daily basis. They were more likely to have optimal concentrations of chronic disease-related biomarkers, and less likely to have suboptimal blood nutrient concentrations, elevated blood pressure, and diabetes compared to non-users and multivitamin/mineral users. These findings should be confirmed by studying the dietary supplement usage patterns, health, and nutritional status of other groups of heavy users of dietary supplements.

Always wishing you a healthy and productive week!

The 12 major hormone disrupting chemicals and how to avoid them-Part 2

7. Lead. Lead has been phased out of gasoline and paint for years, but some older homes still have lead paint on the walls and the soil around them, making it easy for small kids to be exposed when they get lead-laden dust or dirt on their hands and then put their fingers in their mouths. Lead poisoning has been linked to some major health problems such as brain damage, lowered IQ, hearing loss, miscarriage, high blood pressure, and damage to the kidneys and nervous system.

Avoid it. If you have lead paint in your home, regularly dust and vacuum to keep lead particles from accumulating. And use a water filter to remove lead from your drinking water.

8. Arsenic. The mere mention of the word arsenic conjures up images of old murder mysteries and poisoned food, doesn’t it? Levels of arsenic in food get confusing because some foods contain organic arsenic – which occurs naturally —while others contain inorganic arsenic, which is a synthetic compound used in pesticides. It’s the inorganic form that is a known carcinogen and has been linked to bladder, lung and skin cancers; diabetes; and cardiovascular disease.

Avoid it. Use a good water filter to reduce the amount of arsenic in your water and use these tips to minimize arsenic in other commonly contaminated foods such as rice.

9. Mercury. It’s a sad fact of our modern life that one of the healthiest foods to eat — seafood — is also heavily contaminated with the heavy metal mercury. A recent study found that 84 percent of the world’s fish are contaminated with mercury. Most mercury pollution is emitted by coal power plants, but it is also produced as a byproduct of gold mining, cement production, iron and steel production and waste disposal. Mercury poisoning can lead to health issues such as impaired fetal development, kidney failure, hair loss and extreme muscle weakness.

Avoid it. Check out this post on avoiding mercury and eating seafood safely.

10. Perfluorinated chemicals. Also known as PFCs, perfluorinated chemicals are the chemicals used to make nonstick cookware and many other stain- and water-repellent products. They are found in everything from pots and pans to furniture to pesticides. They have been linked to neurological delays, low sperm count, delayed pubertyearlier menopause and infertility

Avoid them. Steer clear of nonstick pans and products that use stain and/or water-resistant coatings.

11. Organophosphate pesticides. Think about this: organophosphate pesticides are chemically designed to attack the nervous system of insects. This is what makes them great insecticides. It’s also what makes them so dangerous for humans. Not surprisingly, organophosphate pesticides have been linked to neurological disorders and other dysfunction in the human body such as ADHD, lowered IQ and delays in reproductive development.

Avoid them. Buy organic produce whenever possible. See this list for the best foods to buy organic.

12. Glycol ethers. Ethylene glycol ethers are common solvents found in paints, cleaning supplies, brake fluid, and even some cosmetics. Exposure has been linked to problems with fetal development, male infertility, asthma, and allergies.

Avoid them. Stay away from any products with names like 2-butoxyethanol (EGBE) and methoxydiglycol (DEGME) in the ingredient list.

The 12 major hormone disrupting chemicals and how to avoid them-Part 1

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) released one of its "Dirty Dozen" lists today, this one with the goal of educating consumers about the worst offenders when it comes to endocrine-disrupters, or hormone-altering chemicals, commonly found in our environment and in our homes. Chemicals that affect or mimic human hormones can cause problems in all of the body's major system, leading to such diseases as high blood pressure, cancer, brain damage and infertility.

Here, according to the EWG, are the Dirty Dozen Endocrine-Disrupters and what you can do to minimize your exposure.

1. BPA. It's no surprise that BPA, or bisphenol-A, tops the EWG's list of endocrine disrupters. We've written about BPA's links to breast cancer, reproductive problems, obesity, asthma, tooth decay, early puberty and heart disease. This chemical, which is commonly found in plastics, mimics the hormone estrogen, wreaking havoc on the body's systems. What's worse, studies show that more than 90 percent of Americans have BPA in their bodies.

Avoid it. The best ways to avoid BPA are to steer clear of plastics (particularly when it comes to food packaging;) choose fresh foods over canned; and opt for a glass or stainless steel water bottle instead of plastic.

2. Dioxin. Dioxin is a byproduct of many industrial processes that involve combustion and it can also be created by natural causes such as volcanic eruptions or forest fires. Dioxins accumulate in the fatty tissues of animals and work their way up the food chain. Humans are primarily exposed through meat and dairy products, fish and shellfish. In the body, they can disrupt the signals of both male and female sex hormones, leading to such problems as infertility, nervous system disorders, skin lesions and cancer.

Avoid it. Dioxin is tough to avoid because of its prevalence in the environment, but the best way to limit exposure is to reduce your consumption of meat, dairy products and fish.

3. Atrazine. Atrazine is a commonly used agricultural herbicide. It does a great job of killing weeds but also happens to wreak havoc on the rest of the environment. It's sprayed on corn crops and easily finds its way into water sources for both humans and animals. Studies have found that even low levels of atrazine can turn male frogs into females. Atrazine has been linked to birth defects, breast tumors, delayed puberty and prostate disorders.

Avoid it. Purchase a water filter to remove atrazine from your drinking water and buy organic produce to keep atrazine out of your house and out of the environment.

4. Phthalates. Found in everything from nail polish to pacifiers to window blinds, phthalates are another ubiquitous chemical in the average household. They are chemical additives that do a great job at making plastics flexible but a not so great job of protecting human health. To date, phthalates have been linked to high blood pressure, ADHD, infertility, obesity, birth defects, thyroid dysfunction and diabetes.

Avoid them: Avoid plastics with the recycling label #3 as these are made from PVC and likely contain phthalates. In the beauty aisle, check product labels and avoid any that list the ambiguous ingredient "fragrance," as this may mean the product contains hidden phthalates.

5. Perchlorate. How did an ingredient found in rocket fuel and fireworks wind up in our water supply? The EPA decided in 2011 to regulate perchlorate according to the Safe Water Drinking Act, but prior to that, it was unregulated — which is why it is now found in the drinking water in 35 states as well as some vegetables and dairy products. Perchlorate may cause thyroid damage and developmental delays in babies.

Avoid it. Use a reverse osmosis filter on your drinking water supply to filter this nasty chemicals out of your water.

6. Fire retardantsFire retardants used in household products — particularly those known as polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs — are incredibly persistent in the environment, which means that even though some of the more toxic versions have been banned or phased out, they will continue to contaminate our water and food supplies for years to come. PBDEs alter normal thyroid function in the body, leading to such problems as lower IQ levels and ADHD.

Avoid them. It's virtually impossible to avoid fire retardants, but you can minimize the level in your home by dusting frequently and using a vacuum cleaner with an HEPA-filter to quickly pick up stray dirt and dust.

PART 5 Shaklee's Energizing Soy Protein

The American Cancer Society has created guidelines
for a healthy diet:

1. Choose most of the foods you eat from plant sources. •Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables
each day. • Eat other foods from plant sources, such as breads,
cereals, grain products, rice, pasta, or beans several times each day.
2. Limit your intake of high-fat foods, particularly from animal sources. •Choose foods low in fat. • Limit consumption of meats, especially those high in fat.
3. Be physically active: achieve and maintain a healthy weight. •Be at least moderately active for 30 minutes or more
each day. •Stay within your healthy weight range.
4. Limit consumption of alcoholic beverages, if you drink at all. •For people who already drink alcoholic beverages, limit
intake to two drinks a day for men and one drink per day for women.
Soy foods fit guidelines 1 and 2 for a health-promoting diet.

What Are Phytoestrogens
and How Do They Work?

Soybeans are rich in a class of phytochemical compounds called isoflavones, particularly the phytoestrogens genistein and daidzein. Phytoestrogens are remarkably similar in molecular structure to the female hormone estrogen. They are thought to behave in the body like estrogen but at just a fraction of the strength of the powerful estrogens naturally produced by the body. Scientists suspect that it’s the relative weakness of these phytoestrogens that may actually work to support and protect our health.
Body tissues that utilize estrogen for normal, healthy function contain estrogen receptors, which bind to the estrogen that circulates in the blood. Researchers have hypothesized that when a diet is rich in soy foods, phytoestrogens may bind to some of these receptors. Phytoestrogens are currently being studied for heart, bone, and breast health.

I hope your week is healthy and productive!

PART 3 Shaklee's Energizing Soy

Who Might Benefit from Energizing Soy Protein?

  • 58 million people who are concerned about heart health • People interested in reducing their intake of the typically high-fat, high-cholesterol animal sources of protein and supplementing their diet with a plant-based protein source that is naturally low in fat and lactose and cholesterol free
  • Vegetarians or vegans looking for a high-quality protein source that contains no animal products
  • People interested in the health benefits associated with consuming soy
  • Anyone interested in supporting the body’s natural ability to ward off hunger and maintain energy for hour

How Does Shaklee Soy Protein
Work to Sustain Energy?

The key to Shaklee Soy Protein’s amazing ability to help people feel energized for hours is something scientists refer to as glycemic response.

Glycemic response describes the effect a food has on blood sugar. Foods like a hot-fudge sundae can cause your blood sugar to spike and then plummet rapidly. A short time after you’ve finished the last spoonful, you feel tired, irritable, and surprisingly hungry considering the number of calories you’ve just consumed. This is exactly the opposite of how you feel after a serving of Shaklee Soy Protein.
In a clinical study, subjects consumed 110 calories from carbohydrates alone and their blood sugar was measured every half hour. As expected, blood sugar shot up immediately and then quickly crashed. It’s this “roller- coaster” response that can lead to feelings of jitteriness, irritability, and hunger.
However, when subjects consumed 110 calories of Shaklee Soy Protein, the results were significantly different. Blood sugar didn’t spike, nor did it plummet. Instead, it remained essentially level. The body’s natural metabolic balance was undisturbed.

Cholesterol is a fatty compound that’s essential for the body and too much cholesterol in the blood can cause wellness issues.
Healthy eating can help to reduce cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is a fatty compound that’s discovered in the blood. It’s mainly produced in the body. Cholesterol plays a vital job in how every cell within the body works. Nonetheless, too much cholesterol within the blood can increase your danger of heart problems.

Healthy eating begins with having the right heart-healthy foods in your kitchen. They assist lower cholesterol and keep your blood pressure under control. If you are not sure which foods to purchase, print this list to take to the grocery store.
Foods high in polyunsaturated fats include margarine spreads and oils for example sunflower, soybean and safflower, oily fish, and some nuts and seeds. Foods high in monounsaturated fats consist of margarine spreads and oils for instance olive, canola and peanut, avocados and some nuts.
Roasted almonds-with the skins
Just a fistful of almonds packs an amazing 9 grams of monounsaturated fat, helping lower bad cholesterol, while enhancing the good kind. Picking almonds instead of a doughnut, chips, or crackers for 2 snacks a day could minimize your ‘bad’ cholesterol by nearly 10 percent. Natural vitamin E within the almond’s ‘meat’ plus flavonoids in this nut’s papery skin also help stop the intro of artery-clogging plaque.

This fatty fruit can also be full of cholesterol-cutting beta-sitosterol.

Pistachios consist of selenium, an antioxidant that avoids heart disease.
Canned salmon
Among omega-3-rich fatty fish, salmon is king: One serving includes about 1.8 grams of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), vital omega-3s which help cut your risk of lethal out-of-rhythm heart beats, reduce bad cholesterol, cool inflammation, and may even prevent atherosclerosis and the development of embolism.
Olive Oil
Powerful antioxidants present in olive oil reduce the low-density lipoproteins in your system. Extra-virgin olive oil is most efficient.

I have Incorporated most of these steps with my Shaklee 180 Weight Loss Program and have lost 37 pounds. I am able to maintain a healthy weight which I feel will help me reduce the risk of such diseases as diabetes and heart disease.

All I can say is get out there and get er' done.

Have a great weekend!
