Well, it is that time of the year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are near, and there is food everywhere. Most people have a mindset to pig-out through the holidays and start their New Years resolution on January 1. I believe this is setting yourself up for failure.
What I have done the past few years has helped me maintain my stable weight of 170. Four years ago, I did weigh 209 pounds and felt slow and sluggish. I discovered the Shaklee 180 Weight Loss program. Shaklee makes products that are clinically tested and contain no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Actually, Shaklee has been around for nearly 60 years, and our co-fouder Dr. Shaklee invented the vitalized mineral, which ended up becoming the vitamin.
I started the program- and to my surprise, I was able to drop 40 pounds and have kept it off since 2011. It wasn't easy, but if you dedicate yourself and follow these 4 simple steps, you can reach a healthy weight, which can change your overall health.
Step 1> Reduce your calorie intake, track your calories, and stay away from processed foods.
Step 2> Find an exercise program and consistently stick with it. Even if you can start by walking, thats a WIN!!!
Step 3> Shaklee 180. I never thought any of the weight loss programs would work, but when I stuck to this one, I actually started to see results. The key to Shaklee 180 is that is keeps lean muscle while you burn off the fat (with exercise of course).
Step 4> Find a support team of friends and family to help keep yourself accountable and help you stick to your weight loss plan. Some contests or some good ole razzing is always fun while you maintain you focus.
So why not start now? You'll have a head-start on all the other people who are blowing it off until 2016. Hit me up if you want to start NOW.
Thanks again for listening to my chatter, I'll be back next week and get more in-depth with the Shaklee 180 products and show you why they are worth their weight in gold.
Have a healthy and productive week!

The Benefits of Supplementation
It's a tough world out there. Our air and water are often full of toxic chemicals and many of our food choices are less than nutritious. Most of us have highly busy lives and devote too little time to being physically active. Despite the fact that nearly 7 out of 10 Americans are overweight to obese, we are ironically often under-nourished. In fact, up to 90 percent of Americans are lacking key nutrients in our diets.
Ensuring we are getting the nourishment needed to support our bodies optimal function can be a challenge, but nutritional supplementation can help fill in those gaps that exist in just about everyone's diet. Countless research studies and health experts agree that supplementing with key nutrients, including a multivitamin, adequate vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids provide a good nutritional foundation.
To understand the relationship between supplementation and long-term health, a first-of-its-kind Landmark Studyii was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University Of California, Berkeley, School Of Public Health.
Researchers gathered a group of Shaklee long-term (20+ years) multi-supplement users and compared their health to non-supplement users. Results were adjusted to account for a number of potential confounders, including age, sex, education, income, and body mass index (BMI).
Questionnaires, on-site physical examinations, and blood work were used to compare nutritional status, serum biomarkers of health risk, and self-assessed health status between the three groups.
The dietary supplements consumed on a daily basis by more than 50 percent of the multi-supplement users included a multivitamin/multimineral, B vitamin complex, vitamins C and E, antioxidants, calcium with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotic, soy protein, glucosamine and an herbal immune supplement.
Researchers discovered that the overall health of long-term multiple supplement users was dramatically different than that of non-supplement users.
The multiple supplement users had improved levels of important heart-healthy biomarkers including 33 percent lower triglycerides, 36 percent lower homocysteine, 59 percent lower C-reactive protein levels, along with 11 percent lower cholesterol to HDL ratio when compared to the non-supplement users. As expected, the multiple supplement users also had higher blood levels of vitamin A, C, E, D, folate, and iron than non-supplement users.
Risk of disease was also much lower in these multiple dietary supplement users than nonusers. As a group, the multiple supplement users had lower risk of high blood pressure (39 percent), lower risk of diabetes (73 percent), and multiple measures of cardiovascular risk were directionally better with supplementation. Multiple supplement users were also four times more likely to describe their health as "very good" or "excellent" compared to non-supplement users.
In most cases, the single supplement users' health markers fell between these two groups, suggesting that multiple supplementation use was both safe and effective.
Quality supplements can help fill nutritional gaps left by less than optimal food choices, our overworked bodies, and our toxic environment.

Finding Your Inner Athlete Part 2
Sports Nutrition, Before, During, and After Workouts
We all know regular exercise is an important component of fitness and health, but how many of us know that what we ate last night and this morning can have a huge impact on the quality of today's workout? Sports nutrition, the science of using simple dietary practices to help optimize athletic performance, combines all the best nutritional components and strategies to ensure your diet will efficiently fuel your exercise regimen—not slow it down.
Let's look at the components of a healthful training diet that supports athletic performance:
- Fluids help maintain normal body temperature and deliver energy and nutrients to hardworking muscles, so it's no surprise that well-hydrated athletes perform better and can sustain longer than their poorly hydrated counterparts.
- Carbohydrate is the fuel of choice for both recreational and competitive athletes because it is the most readily available fuel for working muscles. In fact, low-carbohydrate fuel stores are a common limiting factor in high-intensity and endurance exercise.
- Protein is essential for increasing muscle mass and strength, as well as for recovering from prolonged exercise.
- Vitamins and minerals don't provide energy, but they're essential for converting the food you eat into energy your muscles can use.
Timing the consumption of food and drink throughout your exercise session can significantly improve hydration, energy, recovery, and the quality of individual workouts. Following this hydration and nutrition regimen before, during, and after workouts can help to optimize exercise performance and improve recovery for subsequent workouts.
BEFORE: Two to four hours before exercise, be sure to hydrate early and often, and eat healthful and nutritious carbohydrate-rich foods, including light sandwiches, pasta, salads, fruits, and nutritional bars. Consider more rapidly absorbed nutritional shakes as little as one hour before an event, depending on your individual level of digestive comfort. Continue hydrating right up to the start of an event and consider a natural caffeine boost 30 minutes prior to exercise.
DURING: Continue hydrating with small amounts of cool fluids, including water and sports drinks, every 15 to 30 minutes. For events lasting longer than an hour, consider rapidly digested carbohydrate-rich foods such as bagels, gels, bananas, apples, oranges, and nutritional bars.
AFTER: Try to consume a balanced intake of fluids, carbohydrate, and protein immediately after exercise to maximize hydration, muscle-energy refueling, muscle repair, and muscle rebuilding. The right balance of carbohydrate and protein can trigger and enhance the anabolic recovery process when consumed immediately after exercise and again an hour or two later—especially for those who have multiple daily workout sessions.
Sports nutrition—it's smart nutrition for elite athletes and smart for the athlete inside each of us.
Have a healthy and Productive day!

Finding Your Inner Athlete Part 1
Professional athletes are different from the rest of us. They endure grueling training schedules, adversity, and even pain, yet still find a way to compete and succeed. Sports and competition are not just for professionals, but can be a part of everyone's life. You, too, can become an athlete, not by running a marathon, or biking across France, but by cultivating the mind-set of an athlete and pushing yourself to do the best you can.
Becoming an athlete (whether you compete or not) can have huge benefits for your health and wellbeing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 80 percent of us are not meeting physical activity recommendations for aerobic and non-aerobic exercise. That is unfortunate because we can all benefit from being active. Exercising helps maintain your weight, strengthens bones, contributes to cardiovascular health, reduces stress, and even improves your mood.
What is the difference between you and a serious athlete? It is less than you might think and has to do with their habits and mind-set. Knowing what professionals know can help you live a long and healthy life.
Here is how to find your inner athlete:
- Routine: For athletes, exercising is like bathing or brushing their teeth. It is just something that they do every day (or most days), without questioning whether or not they have the time or the energy. Make exercise part of your day, not an addition to it.
- Uncomfortable: Exercising is not always a comfortable experience. You are going to get too hot or too cold, you are going to sweat, and little aches and pains will pop up from time to time. This is all part of the process and not a reason to stop. In fact, overcoming these challenges can give you a sense of accomplishment that might help you stick to your routine.
- Diet: What you eat is important. The food that you put in your body is not only your fuel, but the basic building blocks of a healthy body. If you want that body to work and function well, you have to fuel it with good nutrition and back that up with nutritional supplements when you are not getting what you need. As you exercise more, you may benefit from products designed to help you with energy, hydration, and muscle recovery.
- Mind Games: Cultivating the mind-set of an athlete means understanding that you can go much further than you think you can. Ultramarathoner Scott Jurak says that the only thing that keeps him going when he is running 50-plus miles is his mind because his body has been telling him to stop for the past hour. Think you have hit your limit? Give a little more effort and you might be surprised at what you can do.
- Competition: A little friendly competition can keep you motivated. Winning is important to most professional athletes, but beating their own personal best is often more motivating. They compete against themselves more than others. Competition, whether in a local 5k or against your own record, can be what gets you out of bed and to your training on the mornings you don't feel like it.
Become an athlete on your level. Try golf, hiking, tennis, swimming, or even walking. Think about challenging yourself with a little competition (look for a run or walk for a cause you believe in to help you stay motivated). The mall is a great place to walk if you live where it gets too hot or too cold for you to exercise outdoors. A pedometer is a great tool to engage that competitive spirit; see if you can walk more steps this week than you did last week.
You may be intimidated by exercising, but it doesn't have to be that hard. You don't have to train for a marathon, triathlon, or iron man competition to become an athlete; you just have to dedicate yourself to getting out there and doing something. Exercise has too many important benefits to leave it to the professionals; borrow the mind-set of the athlete and get out there and hit the road today.
Consult your physician before starting any exercise program, especially if you are significantly overweight, have cardiovascular health issues and/or you have not been exercising regularly.
Have a healthy and productive day! Part 2 Tomorrow!

White Foods Can Be The Right Foods!
White’s alright.
Bright-colored produce generally gets all the love, however white veggies supply vital nutrients that you could be missing, finds a new study review in Advances in Nutrition.
Researchers aimed to dispel the concept that all white is bad. While it’s wise to limit your consumption of white flour and sugar, the researchers discovered the excellent things– potatoes, parsnips, and turnips– can be really good. Compared to various other vegetables, these are a richer source of many nutrients you often fall short on, like fiber, potassium, and magnesium. Why? For one, “plants accumulate more minerals in roots and tubers, which is the kind of vegetable potatoes and parsnips are,” says research coauthor Connie M. Weaver, Ph.D., of Purdue College.
Sure, color can be important when it comes to produce– cancer-fighting carotenoids ensure vegetables red, orange, and yellow, for instance– but it is not constantly a reputable indication of nutrition. Many disease-fighting phytochemicals cannot be seen, Weaver says.
Unlike dark green and orange vegetables, of which you need to eat one serving each a day, there’s no official government recommendation for white vegetables. Merely try to sneak in even more– potatoes, cauliflower, turnips, onions, parsnips, mushrooms, corn, and kohlrabi– into your diet plan weekly. A benefit: spuds please. Research published in the European Diary of Clinical Nutrition discovered that, calorie-for-calorie, white potatoes have the highest satiety index of any food that’s been tested.

They May Supress Your Appetite
Bet we have your attention now. One of those foods is bananas. If that’s not enough to convince you that you can enjoy bananas while losing weight, smell one next time you are hungry.
They’re Natural Performance Enhancers
There may be a reason why most of the world’s best athletes love bananas. Olympian Yohan Blake reportedly eats 16 bananas a day! A recent study from Appalachian State University’s Human Performance Lab found that consuming half a banana every 15 minutes during a cycling time trial test was as effective as drinking a carbohydrate matched sports drink every 15 minutes. If you’re active, bananas are a great option to fuel your muscles while providing antioxidants and other nutrients sports drinks lack.
They Are Portable and Versatile
Bananas are an incredible versatile fruit that can be eaten on-the-go or used in tons delicous recipes, from smoothies to baked goods. We are tempted to say that there is not a single banana recipe we met that we didn’t like, but that would be pushing it. For a healthy dessert option try this: get a couple of ounces of dark chocolate (over 70 percent) and melt it. Slice up a banana and dip each slice in the chocolate until they are fully covered. Place them in a container lined with parchment paper, and put it in the freezer. Let them freeze and enjoy a slice as a snack or dessert.

Feeling a little under the weather? Bananas are great because they’re easy to digest and considered non-irritating for the stomach and upper GI tract. That’s why they’re part of the clinical BRAT diet–, bananas, rice, applesauce and dry toast–which is a diet plan registered dietitians use when patients have acute diarrhea. They are also one of the first fruits that are introduced to young children when they start eating solid foods.

They Can Blood Pressure-Lowering Potassium
A medium banana has 422 mg potassium while being sodium-free. The high potassium:sodium ratio helps to neutralize the blood-pressure raising effects of sodium in your diet. Various studies show that those who have diets rich in potassium are less likely to have high blood pressure and have reduced risk for stroke. Adults need 4,700 milligrams of potassium a day, so a medium banana provides nearly 10 percent of the daily requirement.

How about having a banana to help you feel peachy? A small banana provides 27 mg magnesium, which may help boost mood and reduce feeling blue. Men and women need 420 mg and 320 mg of the mineral per day, respectively. Low levels of this mineral are linked to depression, anxiety, irritability and other mood disorders. Since many of us don’t get enough magnesium in our diets, consider a banana as your chill pill.
They Can Be Ripened at Home
If you are at the store and all of the ripe bananas are gone, don’t fret. Here is a tip to make them ripen faster. Place the bananas in a paper bag with an apple, pear or tomato. The ethylene gas that the those fruits emit will accelerate the ripening process. Check them daily until they are as ripe as you like them.
