Top 10 small steps you can do to save the environment
Helping the environment doesn’t have to be that hard, in fact there many small things you can do that have a big impact.
Take a look:
- Filter your own water: Since studies show bottled water is often no better than tap water, why would you waste your money and harm the environment by buying bottled water? Fossil fuels are wasted in the unnecessary production, manufacture, and transportation of bottled water. Once in a consumer’s hand, it is estimated that more than 75 percent of these bottles end up in landfills. To ensure you are getting the best water your body needs, try filtering your own water; it is much cheaper and far healthier for you. I like sparkling water, so I’ve purchased a snazzy little device that adds CO2 to my filtered water—and voilà, I have healthier, environmentally friendlier bubbly water!
- Replace your bulbs: Both compact fluorescent bulbs and LED bulbs use much less energy than old incandescent bulbs (and save you money). LED bulbs have a very high up-front price tag, but have a lifespan of around 20 years. Imagine replacing a bulb and then not having to do it again for two decades!
- Plastic bags: One-use, throwaway bags are a waste of energy and resources. Choose a few strong, reusable bags and put them in your trunk. It takes only a few times having to run out to your car to get those reusable bags for you to remember them every time.
- Eat low on food chain: Even one meatless meal a week can help to reduce your carbon footprint. It has been estimated that it requires 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef and that cows contribute greatly to the greenhouse effect by producing large amounts of methane. Choose organically grown and pasture-raised meats when you do eat beef to reduce the amount of chemicals in the environment.
- Plant: Every time you plant something, you help the environment. Consider growing your own garden this spring! Plant some pretty potted flowers in your backyard—and don’t forget a little greenery inside your house. I try to have a plant in almost every room in my house. All this yard work is great exercise too!
- Go paperless: Computers were supposed to usher in the era of the paperless society, but the opposite has happened. You can go paperless by paying bills online and avoiding bills sent to your house. Estimates are that paperless billing in America would save nearly 19 million trees, 2.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide, and 1.7 billion pounds of solid waste every year. You can take it a step further by cutting out junk mail. There are many services that can help you get off mailing lists, try searching the Internet for a good company.
- Buy locally: You cannot buy everything locally, but commit to as much as you can. The local food movement is growing and farmers markets are popping up all over. Even grocery stores are getting into the act by having part of the produce section devoted to locally grown foods. The estimates on savings are hard to determine, but it makes sense that buying an apple grown in your state is much less energy intensive than having it shipped from thousands of miles away.
- Walk/bike: Think before you get in your car. Can your errand be combined with another trip? Can you use a bike or walk instead? Try committing to using public transportation once a week or once a month. According to the EPA, leaving your car at home just two days a week can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions by an average of two tons per year.
- Take your lunch: It may not seem obvious at first why brown-bagging it helps the environment, but eating out usually means a trip in a car, the use of containers, paper products, and plastic throwaway utensils. Most restaurant food is going to be less healthy and higher in calories than what you might bring from home, so this step is good for your waistline and helping the environment.
- Clean cleaning: Harsh chemicals in most cleaners are not good for you or the environment. Chemical cleaners have been linked with many health issues, including skin rashes and asthma flare-ups. Do yourself and the environment a favor and drop the chemical cleaners for earth-friendly versions.
Bonus tip: My best tip? Share these tips with your family and friends. It’s amazing that some of the smallest, easiest steps like sharing a good tip or great result from a product are so easy to share and each little step leads to big changes/differences.
What do you do in your personal life to help the environment?
Be well!

The Benefits of Supplementation
It's a tough world out there. Our air and water are often full of toxic chemicals and many of our food choices are less than nutritious. Most of us have highly busy lives and devote too little time to being physically active. Despite the fact that nearly 7 out of 10 Americans are overweight to obese, we are ironically often under-nourished. In fact, up to 90 percent of Americans are lacking key nutrients in our diets.
Ensuring we are getting the nourishment needed to support our bodies optimal function can be a challenge, but nutritional supplementation can help fill in those gaps that exist in just about everyone's diet. Countless research studies and health experts agree that supplementing with key nutrients, including a multivitamin, adequate vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids provide a good nutritional foundation.
To understand the relationship between supplementation and long-term health, a first-of-its-kind Landmark Studyii was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University Of California, Berkeley, School Of Public Health.
Researchers gathered a group of Shaklee long-term (20+ years) multi-supplement users and compared their health to non-supplement users. Results were adjusted to account for a number of potential confounders, including age, sex, education, income, and body mass index (BMI).
Questionnaires, on-site physical examinations, and blood work were used to compare nutritional status, serum biomarkers of health risk, and self-assessed health status between the three groups.
The dietary supplements consumed on a daily basis by more than 50 percent of the multi-supplement users included a multivitamin/multimineral, B vitamin complex, vitamins C and E, antioxidants, calcium with vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, probiotic, soy protein, glucosamine and an herbal immune supplement.
Researchers discovered that the overall health of long-term multiple supplement users was dramatically different than that of non-supplement users.
The multiple supplement users had improved levels of important heart-healthy biomarkers including 33 percent lower triglycerides, 36 percent lower homocysteine, 59 percent lower C-reactive protein levels, along with 11 percent lower cholesterol to HDL ratio when compared to the non-supplement users. As expected, the multiple supplement users also had higher blood levels of vitamin A, C, E, D, folate, and iron than non-supplement users.
Risk of disease was also much lower in these multiple dietary supplement users than nonusers. As a group, the multiple supplement users had lower risk of high blood pressure (39 percent), lower risk of diabetes (73 percent), and multiple measures of cardiovascular risk were directionally better with supplementation. Multiple supplement users were also four times more likely to describe their health as "very good" or "excellent" compared to non-supplement users.
In most cases, the single supplement users' health markers fell between these two groups, suggesting that multiple supplementation use was both safe and effective.
Quality supplements can help fill nutritional gaps left by less than optimal food choices, our overworked bodies, and our toxic environment.

Shaklee Pure Performance Team in Sochi 2014
"It’s heavy!”
That’s how Team USA’s Chris Creveling described the silver medal he claimed at the 2014 Sochi Games in the 5000-meter relay in short track speed skating. “Of course the physical medal is great, and I dreamed of standing on the podium with a medal all my life,” the elite athlete explained, “but nothing can compare to the feeling of pride and accomplishment after you’ve overcome so many challenges to meet your goals.”
Joining Chris on the relay team was Jordan Malone, another Shaklee Pure Performance Team member.
These Shaklee Pure Performance Team members were two of the 10 athletes sponsored by Shaklee who came home with medals. Those 10 athletes, along with 14 more Shaklee Pure Performance Team members who competed in Sochi, engaged in some of the most hard-fought competitions on the world’s stage. “It was the most aggressive racing I’ve ever seen,” Chris said. “Even the qualifying heats were a brawl, a four-hour scrap-fest.”
Indeed, each of the 10 medal winners fought valiantly for every centimeter, one-thousandth of a second, or goal they could scrape out, and Americans—including the Shaklee Family—could not be more proud of them. Here are our medal-winning Shaklee Pure Performance Team heroes:
1. Kacey Bellamy: Silver medal, Women’s ice hockey
2. Megan Bozek: Silver medal, Women’s ice hockey
3. Chris Creveling: Silver medal, 5,000-meter relay, short track speed skating
4. Brianna Decker: Silver medal, Women’s ice hockey
5. Jamie Greubel: Bronze medal, Women’s bobsled
6. Jordan Malone: Silver medal, 5,000-meter relay, short track speed skating
7. Brianne McLaughlin: Silver medal, Women’s ice hockey
8. Molly Schaus: Silver medal, Women’s ice hockey
9. Kelli Stack: Silver medal, Women’s ice hockey
10. Curt Tomasevicz: Bronze medal, Four-man bobsled
Talk about heavy expectations: The USA women’s ice hockey team garnered much attention for their epic battles with the Canadian team, and no one placed more pressure on the team than its own members.
“This moment in these Games has been our driving obsession since Vancouver in 2010,” explained goaltender Brianne McLaughlin, “and although we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, we know we skated an amazing game and played incredibly well.”
Brianne noted that Team USA had defeated Canada four straight times in the seven months leading up to Sochi, so the team was confident coming into the Games. “Our preparation was fantastic; compared to 2010 we changed the attitude and atmosphere on the team, changed our training, our structure, and everyone bought into it,” she said. “We wanted to be the best, so we knew we needed to play the best opponent and never back down. Although we’re still hurting at the loss, we realize we achieved an incredible feat and we are proud of each other’s commitment to the team.”
While all the Shaklee Pure Performance Team members represented themselves admirably, not all carried away a medal. Erika Brown, the “skip” (team captain) for the women’s curling team, had high hopes for her team in Sochi, but the Americans could only claim one victory in nine matches. Still, participating in the monumental spectacle of the Games was an honor she’ll relish forever. “All the grandeur you might imagine about the Games is true—the world gathers in a peaceful but rousing event that helps us realize there are things bigger than ourselves,” she said. “It was awesome to be on our own small team, and an even greater honor to be a member of the ‘big team,’ Team USA. And everyone simply wanted to do their best.”
Bronze medalist bobsledders Curt Tomasevicz and Jamie Greubel might be on the back end of their competitive careers, but in Sochi they were leading the way for the U.S. bobsledders. Jamie finally won her medal in women’s bobsled after narrowly missing the U.S. team in 2010, and after a sterling World Cup season that gave her the confidence in her abilities heading into Sochi. Curt’s bronze medal in the four-man bobsled marked the second consecutive Games that he earned a medal, having been a member of the team that won gold in 2010, breaking a 62-year drought in that event for the Americans.
Even if he steps away from the sled as he claims he will, Curt will do so with no regrets. “I feel great about this medal, and our years of hard work really paid off,” he proclaimed.
Complete results for all Shaklee athletes and events in Sochi are available at this link. What you won’t find on that website are the numerous inspirational stories of the athletes who stood tall and charged forward with weighty expectations of all types, from the opening ceremonies to the challenges of every competition to the extinguishing of the flame. We’ll relate several of those stories from our Pure Performance Team members in upcoming reports on this Health Wise blog page, so check back frequently and on the Shaklee Corporation Facebook page. In the meantime, we offer our most heartfelt congratulations to all the Shaklee athletes in Sochi who stirred a rousing flame within each of us:

Your heart needs health
Whenever people ask me which supplements they should be taking, at the top of the list are the omega-3 fatty acids. Since this is the month for love and heart health, I thought I’d take the time to explain the importance of omega-3 for our most poetic (and important) of organs.
You probably know that there are fats you need to avoid (like trans fats and saturated fats) if you want to have a healthy heart, but you may not know that there are other fats that you actually NEED to have in your diet to help your heart be healthy.
The omega-3 fatty acids (also known as EPA/DHA) are considered “essential” because you must get them in your diet—our bodies do not make them, so if your diet does not provide adequate amounts of these fats you may be missing these necessary nutrients. While the omega-3 fatty acids are important for many bodily functions, they are incredibly important for heart health.
Researchers have been investigating the link between omega-3s and heart health; let’s take a look at some key findings:
•Omega-3 fatty acids may help you lower your overall cholesterol levels. In fact, not only do they seem to reduce cholesterol in general, they also may help to raise HDL (the “good” cholesterol) levels. Other studies have shown that supplementing with 2 to 4 grams of omega-3s also may lower triglyceride levels.
•As you may know, chronic inflammation in our bodies is bad and can be especially harmful to our heart. The omega-3 fatty acids also have a role to play in inflammation, where they help to produce chemicals in our bodies (called eicosanoids) that may reduce inflammation.
•Other studies have shown the omega-3s were able to help lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting, and even seem to reduce irregular heartbeats.
•Another study has shown that eating at least one to two servings a week of fish (that’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids) appears to reduce the risk of heart disease, particularly sudden cardiac death.
•A new report titled Smart Prevention—Health Care Cost Savings Resulting from the Targeted Use of Dietary Supplements suggests that if people at high risk for Coronary Heart Disease would take 1 gram of EPA+DHA a day that the cost saving (from prevented heart disease) would be more than $480 million dollars per year in health care cost savings.
The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating one to two servings of cold-water fish every week. Since so many people have a hard time making that goal, another recommendation is supplementing with at least 1 gram per day of EPA+DHA.
The best way to take care of your heart is to eat healthfully, avoid fast foods, get to a BMI of 25 or below, become more active, and add at least a gram of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, through a healthy diet including fish and/or supplementation.

A day in a life with Shaklee 180
This is a guest post written by Maggie Smith of Dexter’s Super Savvy Mommy. Maggie was part of Shaklee Corporation’s Team #Cinchspiration campaign and is now the Shaklee 180® blogger spokesperson. Maggie received free products, online support, and incentives for participating.
I have been following the Shaklee 180® Program for just over 18 months and I must say that it has been my favorite way to lose weight. I have always had a hard time sticking to a plan because I get bored with the lack of variety in products and flavors in other weight-loss programs. Lucky for me, Shaklee 180 has so many wonderful flavors and meal options that it’s almost impossible for me to get bored.
In my first six months on the program, I lost just more than 40 pounds and 30 inches*. Over this past year I have lost another six pounds, and I’m ready to take the bull by the horns, sweat more, and lose more!
So, what does my day of my life with Shaklee 180 look like for me?
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I love to incorporate frozen fruit and almond milk in my Shaklee 180 Energizing Smoothies. They are refreshing, filling, and delicious. The best part is that I stay satiated until lunch.
Come lunchtime, most days I prefer a quick hand-shaken Café Latte Energizing Smoothie. I sit at a desk a lot of the day so having a lunch that I can consume quickly and easily wherever I am is convenient.
A bag of Sea Salt Snack Crisps dipped into a mix of 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt and 2 tablespoons super spicy salsa (you can sub any salsa you want but I adore things very spicy!) makes the perfect afternoon snack. This snack is not only low in calories but it is packed with protein thanks to the Greek yogurt and Shaklee 180 Snack Crisps. This snack keeps me satisfied until dinner!
Dinner—ah, yes. This is when I get creative. Here is my very favorite cauliflower crust “pizza.” It may take a while to make but it is well worth it. The crust is free from flours/starch and loaded with veggies and nutrient-dense ingredients. Paired with roasted veggies, this meal is light, healthy, and Shaklee 180 friendly!
In addition to a healthy meal plan, exercise is key to losing weight. I like to start my day with 20 minutes of yoga to not only get my blood pumping but feel that amazing and invigorating stretch. Midafternoon, when I find myself sitting at my computer for far too long, I pop in my Just Dance 4 and get grooving for at least 15 minutes. Before I know it, I have lost track of time and found myself dancing after 35 minutes!
We would love to hear how you include Shaklee 180 in your day. Comment below and inspire others!
Results and experiences from the Shaklee 180 Program are unique for each person, so results may vary. People following the weight-loss portion of the Shaklee 180 Program can expect to lose 1-2 pounds a week.

How is your 2014 weight loss resolution going?
Hello all,
I hope your 2014 is going great so far. Many of you started a weight loss resolution last month and might have fallen off track a little. I am here to say that a fresh start is possible everyday. First, write down you new weight loss goals and find a weight loss program that suits you, second, fine a regular exercise routine and stick with it, and third, eat healthier foods and portion your meals.
These are the three key areas that helped me maintain and successfully lose almost 40 pounds. In the beginning, it's hard, but once you get into the daily routine, it's will be easy.
There are many weight loss programs out their, but I found my success with Shaklee 180. The reason I chose Shaklee 180 is due to it's clinical's that provided me with the evidence that it is truly safe and effective when you throw your dedication into it. The non-GMO soy in the smoothies was another reason I chose Shaklee 180. I like to know what I'm putting in my body. Being low glycemic with no artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives is another reason I recommend Shaklee 180.
This is my choice, but if you find a program, ask them for clinically studies that their product is safe to help lose weight.
I hope you all have a healthy and productive week. ENJOY!

Key Strategies for Staying Healthy This Winter
Our Best Prevention Strategies:
Why is it that science is still no closer to a cure for colds and flu? It's because we're dealing with smart viruses. Any one of hundreds of viruses could launch a cold or flu attack, and chances are that this year's flu virus won't be the same as last year's making it nearly impossible to develop a simple cure. But there's still much you can do to stay strong and healthy all winter.
Take Good Care of Yourself: As always, the best place to start to maintain a good immune system is with the basics. Make sure to keep exercising, sleep well, reduce stress, drink alcohol in moderation, and eat a low-fat, low-sugar diet.
Wash Your Hands: Washing hands remains the most effective way to protect yourself and your family from colds and flu. Lather, rinse, repeat throughout the day. Do it long enough to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.
Boost the Beneficial Bacteria: 80 percent of your immune system surrounds your digestive system. Research supports a healthy gut flora and overall immunity.
Add Foods that Support Immune Health: There are many foods with medicinal properties, make sure you include as many as possible. Think about combining a lot of the ingredients below in chicken soup.
Oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, potatoes and other vitamin C and E rich fruits and vegetables are all good for your immune system.
Shiitake, Maitake, and other mushrooms have been used, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine, for boosting the immune system.
Garlic and Onions not only taste great but have also been researched for their ability to modulate immune function.
Helpful Herbs: Research supports the immune modulating activity of tumeric, oregano, ginger, Echinacea, Larch, and elderberry. A unique combination of plant extracts discovered in Japan, using pumpkinseed, safflower flower, Asian plantain, and Japanese honeysuckle were shown in a study to stimulate the immune system response.
Make Sure You are Getting the Right Nutrients: Your immune system needs to be well nourished to function at its best. Stock up on the following nutrients:
Macro-Nutrients: the macro-nutrients are proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Focus on good proteins; it is essential for a healthy immune system.
Supplement with EPA and DHA, or eat fish twice a week for those healthy fats.
Vitamins and Minerals: Vitamins such as vitamin A, B6, B12, E C, folate, and the minerals zinc, copper and iron all support an effective immune response.
Vitamin D: vitamin D, in particular, has been the focus research on optimal immune system functioning. Vitamin D plays a role in the improving mucus membrane barrier functioning, the production of anti-microbial peptides (small proteins), and in general overall immune support.
Take care of your immune system by starting early, taking good care of yourself, and feeding your body the nutrients it needs to stay strong.

How Your Immune System Works
Your Immune System
You are exposed to billions of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other microbes on a daily basis. To give you an idea of just how many, your hand alone has more germs living on it then there are humans alive today. Most germs you encounter are harmless, but some can make you sick.
Luckily, you have your immune system to keep the bad germs at bay.
Your immune system is made up of a complex and vital network of specialized cells and organs that protect your body from infections and diseases. Behind the scenes, 24 hours a day, your immune system stays alert patrolling for intruders.
Billions of white blood cells make up the bulk of your immune system and each white blood cell has a special job. T-Cells produce specialized substances that activate other white blood cells to attack foreign invaders. B-Cells produce antibodies that fight specific infections. Macrophages and neutrophils gobble up bacteria and other invaders.
Fighting Infections
Your immune system is not simply a collection of white blood cells; specialized proteins (such as antibodies and interferon) are produced in response to infections.
Antibodies: Each kind of germ has an outer layer that's different from those on other germs and a unique antibody is produced to match each of these outer layers. Antibodies your body produced to fight off last year's flu virus can't get a grip on this year's model. So your immune system has to go back to the drawing board and make new antibodies. The good news is germs can't fool your immune system twice. Once your body has withstood an attack by a specific germ, the antibody-making cells remain on alert. They're ready to rumble if the same germs show up again.
Interferon: Interferon is a natural protein released by infected cells and it "interferes" with viral replication (this is interferon, how it got its name). Viruses, you may know, are unable to do anything on their own. Typically, they invade a host's cells and then hijack that cell to produce more viruses (this is viral replication). Interferon directly blocks viruses from replicating. Overall, interferon increases the immune system's recognition of an infection.[i] It communicates with neighboring cells (to increase their defenses) and triggers the immune system by enhancing T-cell activity, phagocytic (gobbling) activity of macrophages,[ii] and increasing the cellular destruction capability of natural killer cells.[iii]Interferon, antibodies, and white blood cells act together as powerful allies to keep your immune system primed for when those bad germs come knocking at your door.

Is it a cold or the flu?
Every year cold-and-flu season sprinkles its misery on just about everyone. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Americans suffer from a staggering one billion colds every year and have a 20 percent chance of getting the flu. Adults average 2-4 colds a year; kids typically get more, with some getting as many as 12 colds every year.
You and your family may be next, and it is important to know whether you have a cold or flu.
Colds rarely cause serious complications; only about one percent of cases lead to complications (mostly sinus or ear infections). The flu, on the other hand, is responsible for around 200,000 hospitalizations every year. A virus is the cause of both colds and flu and though they share many symptoms, each illness has telltale signs.
Flu versus Cold
In general, flu tends to come on fast, makes you feel exhausted, and is more intense. The flu comes and goes quickly. Flu is more likely to leave you with a lingering cough or feeling tired for weeks. If your muscles are achy and you have a temperature, you most likely have the flu. You are the most contagious five to seven days from when you first feel bad.
Colds, on the other hand, start with a runny or stuffy nose and maybe a sore throat that you may have felt coming on for days. When you have a cold, you either don't have a fever, or it is very mild. You are most contagious during the first three days of getting a cold, during that sore throat phase.
If you are coughing, sneezing, or have a sore throat, then you are more likely to be in the cold camp, where a headache will put you more in the flu camp; but these symptoms are shared by both illnesses.
Take a look at this chart to determine if it is a cold or flu:
Prevention is the Key
As with almost any illness, prevention is your best strategy. When you start seeing that people are getting sick around you, remember to eat well, exercise, and get enough sleep. The number one prevention tool you have is to wash your hands frequently.
When to Pay Attention
The big concern about colds and flu is not the illness itself, but what occurs afterwards.
Bacterial infections (which can be much worse than a virus) are more likely to happen in someone with the flu. Any long-lasting fever suggests a bacterial infection. If a cold goes on for more than 4 or 5 days, or if you are coughing up yellow phlegm, then you should to seek the advice of a doctor.
Severe flu, like the Swine flu, is associated with persistent vomiting and diarrhea. Pneumonia (lung infection) typically presents as a fever that returns after being gone for a few days.
The warning signs that mean you should visit your doctor are painful swallowing, a long persistent cough, vomiting, severe diarrhea, shortness of breath, or any rash. Most colds and flu come and go without any problems and are easy to take care of on your own. Paying attention to your symptoms will help guide you in your decision to seek additional care.

Shaklee and the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games-Bobsledder Curt Tomasevicz: From the short burst to the long haul
As a “pusher” on the U.S. four-man bobsled team, Shaklee Pure Performance Team member and elite athlete Curt Tomasevicz knows how to expend tremendous amounts of energy in a short time—very short. “My job is 95% complete after the first five explosive seconds out of the gate,” said the 2010 Vancouver Games gold medalist. “But for those five seconds I need to pack in all the energy, focus, power, and agility I can muster.
Preparing for those crucial five seconds is now Curt’s full-time obsession. “Our routine includes six to eight hours a day of training: sled runs, squatting up to 600 pounds, bursts of sprints and pushing, and, of course, wedging into the sled thousands of times.” He added, “It takes a long time to ‘feel’ a good run, but when it all comes together, it’s definitely worth the years of hard work.”
Curt and his teammates are gearing up for the 2014 Sochi Games in February, where they will sidle up to their missile-like sled, a sleek blend of aluminum, carbon-fiber, hard rubber, and steel skids. They’ll surge through the mile-long ice chute in less than a minute, attaining speeds up to 95 miles per hour, where three of the four team members simply can’t see what’s happening—a phenomenon fairly unique in the sports world.
But what they can’t see for about 55 seconds they certainly can hear. “It’s loud!” Curt exclaimed, “Especially when all your senses are attuned to every little detail of the run. The wind noise, the gasping of the pushers, and the skids on the ice are nearly deafening. There are no Zamboni machines to smooth the track, so the knifing on the bumpy ice goes right into our helmets.”
When Curt and his teammates won gold at Vancouver in 2010, it was the first time an American bobsled team claimed the top honors since 1948. That was way too long for the American team members, who want to rule the winner’s podium not for a short burst but for the long haul.
“I have complete confidence in all of Shaklee’s products and the purity of their ingredients,” says Curt. “Shaklee allows me to stress over the competitions, instead of what I consume.”

Shaklee and the 2014 Sochi Olympic Game-The hardest part of the sled: Jamie Greubel
Everything about Jamie Greubel’s bullet-like bobsled points to one intention: speed.
The carbon-fiber shell flows smoothly from the hammerhead shark nose. So slick that even dust can’t settle on it, the shimmering body slices through the cold air as the shiny steel skids skim the frozen track like a beam of light skipping off a mirror. And it even sounds fast: Skaroosh!
Jamie knows all about speed. This Shaklee Pure Performance Team member has been swooshing down ice chutes as a member of the U.S. Bobsled team since 2007, and she’s currently streaking toward the 2014 Sochi Games in February.
“I’ve been chasing this dream for a huge part of my adult life,” said the Cornell University grad, “and now it seems like I can’t get there fast enough.”
But with the opening ceremony fast approaching, Jamie is right on track to reach her dreams. She’s developed into one of America’s top bobsled pilots and her recent successes include a bronze medal at the World Cup in Calgary in November, as well as a first place finish at the North American Cup.
Having recently returned from intense training sessions on the bobsled track in Sochi, Jamie is thrilled about the possibilities at the Games. “The track offers several challenges with its technical curves and uphill sections, but good teams will bring in some wicked times and I feel very comfortable on that ice,” she explained. “In my mind, I’m already there, and we’re going fast!”
A multisport athlete while at Cornell University, her transition to bobsled went smoothly.. But her greatest asset isn’t merely physical—it’s her mental strength and unrelenting desire to succeed.
Though she flashes a smile that her helmet can barely contain and her soft-spoken nature is anything but icy, Jamie Greubel is a model of steely resolve, fortitude, and jubilant competitiveness that just might power her across that finish line in Sochi faster than anyone else. “That’s my goal,” Jamie said. “I know that nothing of great worth comes easy, and people can accomplish anything they set their mind to.”
Are you heading toward your goals in life? If so, are you like our elite athletes and fueling your way with Shaklee products? Share with me some of your favorite products in the comments section, and strap on your Jamie Greubel attitude—you just might reach your goals with unbelievable speed!

Pieces of a puzzle – getting to successful weight loss
If you have ever wondered what the key to successful weight loss is, you are not alone.
Weight loss and maintenance is a hard puzzle to crack. But after spending years combing the scientific literature I have what I consider to be a good solution to why some people lose weight and keep it off and others don’t.
There are three pieces of the puzzle to weight-loss success.
When people set out to lose weight, they often chose only one aspect of their lives to change. They pick a diet, they join a gym, or they buy a new bathroom scale and pledge to weigh every day. Diet, exercise, and behavior change are three complementary approaches to weight management. Can you successfully lose weight by just changing (for example) your diet? Yes, but when you add physical activity and behavior modification to the mix, you greatly increases your chances to achieve and maintain a healthier weight.
Let’s take a look each piece and see how they fit into the puzzle:
Diet: In order to lose weight you are looking to remove 500-1,000 calories a day from your diet. The biggest problem with calorie reduction is that you feel like you are losing something. The best way to achieve this reduction and not feel hungry is to eat foods that help you feel full. Low glycemic index foods are typically low in sugar and high in protein and/or fiber; the energy contained in such foods is digested and absorbed more slowly, which helps manage hunger and energy levels. Make sure when you cut calories that you are still giving your body the nutrition it needs; I like adding veggies and fruit to a protein smoothie for breakfast as part of my plan. A good multivitamin is another way to make certain you aren’t missing essential nutrients.
Physical activity: Exercise–in the broad sense of physical movement–really should be a lifelong habit. Maintaining your weight loss may very well be impossible without some form of exercise. Activities of daily living—like walking the dog–count; finding ways to take more steps each day is another good place to start. Resistance exercise is also important; it helps maintain muscle mass during weight loss, and that keeps your metabolism up. Recent research suggests that how hard you exercise matters, so pick up the intensity as you adapt to an exercise routine.
Behavior modification: When you think about it, we are all a collection of habits and our habits influence what we weigh. Behavior modification means changing what you are doing towards more healthy habits. Experts agree that setting goals, self-monitoring, and learning to deal with your specific challenges all contribute to adopting healthy habits.
On your path to losing weight, you are going to run into many challenges, but it doesn’t have to be that hard. Making small positive changes that you can stick with put you on the path to success. What small changes will you make? Share them in the comments section below.
